The crisis in the aviation sector over the rising cost of aviation fuel and trapped revenue dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

Sunday Punch reports that the rising cost of aviation fuel has caused apprehension among operators of airlines in Nigeria. Babachir Lawal, former secretary to the government of the federation and Yakubu Dogara, a former speaker of the house of representatives, said their visit to Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, is not political, the newspaper says.

Sunday Tribune says international airlines are set to reduce their number of flights to Nigeria over trapped revenue. The newspaper reports that Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, said Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, is the choice of Afenifere. Sunday Independent reports that Nigerians have slammed the federal government over a lack of economic and security policies. Magnus Abe, a former senator, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Rivers, the newspaper says.

The Guardian says President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of the country’s security has been described as a move towards a descent into a failed state. The newspaper reports that Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, has asked Muslims to pray for Nigeria to commemorate the Islamic New Year. Daily Sun reports that northern Christians in the All Progressives Congress have insisted that the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket is divisive, unjust and insensitive. The newspaper says 5,000 APC members are set to decamp to the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers state.
