Brexit, a small local population and the lure of jobs elsewhere are said to be hitting recruitment.

A Lake District cruise company has launched a major recruitment drive as it warns the area's tourism industry is struggling to fill vacancies.

Windermere Lake Cruises said it had 100 roles available, including on its boats and in shops and cafes.Despite being one of the country's most popular visitor destinations, the county of Cumbria has one of the smallest populations.and people taking higher-paid jobs elsewhere.Ian Wilkinson, of Windermere Lake Cruises, believes a number of issues are to blame for recruitment troubles

Ian Wilkinson, HR manager at the cruise firm, said there had been "all sorts of issues finding staff"."We've not been able to recruit people to all the roles we'd want to, which has to some extent impacted our services. "We've got issues related to Brexit, and a lot of hospitality roles in Cumbria are live-in jobs but we can't provide accommodation so the people who used to come to us are now working elsewhere leaving a smaller pool for us."

Mr Wilkinson said the firm welcomed a trend of employing more older people looking for to work two or three days per week "but the knock-on effect is we need more people".England's largest lake, Windermere sees thousands of tourists flock during the summer months with many travelling across the water on "steamer" vessels.

Like all other industries, the government has made it too easy for those who are capable of working not to work yet the system is too hard in pushing people into to work when they are seriously ill or physically ill

We import one million immigrants a year so how come it is difficult? Do none of them work?

Time to stop “workers” who wont work from receiving handouts!

Pay peanuts attract monkey's

Do you think it has anything to do with affordable housing? Maybe the tourism industry helped create that problem?

Ever thought about paying people a decent wage? Thought not, so struggle.

What you say, people don't want to work for 4.50/h ?

“Almost 285,000 Cumbrians voted in the 2016 referendum, with only South Lakeland coming out for remain. Allerdale, Carlisle, Eden, Copeland and Barrow all voted to leave. 62 per cent of voters in Copeland backed leave - the highest in the country.” Poor old Sth Lakeland.

“a lot of hospitality roles in Cumbria are live-in jobs but we can't provide accommodation” Yeah that’s usually a stumbling block.

It's called Brexit amongst other things.

pay a proper wage to hospitality workers then…

Not forgetting that todays younger folk WRONGLY see this type of work as 'beneath them'.

Lake District tourism industry 'struggling to find cheap labour' fixed that for you

Something else destroyed by Brexit

Bbbbbbbbbbbrexitttttttttttt

Duh RishiSunak pull out your fingers and a new seasonal visa category. It can be restricted to nine months, no benefits and no dependents. easypeasy Swiss have been doing it for years.

Seasonal work for ‘I’d pay you less if wasn’t illegal’ wages? It’s a shocker the applications aren’t flying in.

So look at those seeking jobs....

Lower profit margins increase wages easy

There’s nowhere to live, no rental property and little public transport.

Plenty of people on benefits nothing to do with brexit BBC

Just came in here to see the wet wipes still moaning about Brexit. I wasn’t disappointed.

Brexicide. Massive act of self harm. A shit storm where the forces of greed, nationalism, racism and ignorance wreck our prosperity and so much more. ☹️

are they paying them properly? if not that's probably why

Racist Lake District will be the next shout.

Pay people a proper wage, not just the minimum wage? Just an idea

Go Brexit! Dumbest idea ever!

You probably get better wages at Keswick Tesco, that's why. The cost of housing in the Lake District is eyewatering and hospitality doesn't pay that much. 'Live-in' is fine if you don't have a family but you're never away from work though, are you?

It's the BBC'S B-R-E-X-I-T

Jeremy Hunt would tell you 'hire clapped out inexperienced pensioners'. Someone sensible would tell you 'hire skilled workers from Europe on extended work visas'.

I’d love to work in the Lake District!

Hopefully with a rebound of soon to arrive Chinese tourists, these jobs may become better paid and give more confidence for hospitality job seekers.

Change that to”Lake District tourism industry ‘struggling to find workers who’ll work for next to fuk-all”.

I had a job offer yesterday from Tesco £14.40 an hour shelf filling, even that wont get the fat idle lumps of Universal Credit. Before you ask I'm retired.

Universal Credit is to high. why work when you can sit on your fat idle arse. labours free utopian dream

It’s largely due to the fact that the work is seasonal, with significantly more workers being required in the summer months

Surprised BBC are running this story, isn't there any news from America they can cover?

Improve the package offered. Include accommodation Increase pay It’s not complicated.

Middle of nowhere; hotels full of migrants. Guess not paying enough to afford 5* hotels. as all the cheap places are full. tent on the hillside might not be appealing to folk; since its cold. Nice and warm migrants though.

Are there no pensioners to exploit?

Not surprised, people can't afford to stay nearby at wages offered. Double pay and see what happens.

Even strippers !!!! We need Russia 🇷🇺!!!

They all left plague island for the EU when they realised how unwelcome we’d made them feel. This is a consequence of Brexit. About time you stepped up and mentioned the B word.

*lake district employers fail to pay living wage, and thus are short workers.

UK population has grown since 2016. Brexit is the issue or other factors? Common sense says it's not Brexit, but pay/conditions. A win for Brexit, as UK workers now get more money.

Accommodation costs. Wages don’t match and if no live in accom, travel costs have to be taken into account. Poor public transport links mean people cannot commute easily from places with cheaper rent

this is bullshit they can find who they want if they pay the right Money they want cheap Labour they can exploit

Pay is shite

Every business is! If you haven’t found a job after 6 weeks stop the benefits if it’s not your first choice of work you can look for your ideal job whilst working

Everywhere is struggling to find workers, that's what's happened since the benefits system has turned us into a nation of daytime TV watchers - and there are 500,000 more 'economically inactive' people since the start of covid and furlough

Pay better wages

Blaming Brexit is basically admitting you exploited young people from Europe and can no longer get away with it. You can't hire indigenous [young] people because they refuse to work for peanuts.

It's what they wanted

' a lot of hospitality roles in Cumbria are live-in jobs but we can't provide accommodation' Live in jobs come with accommodation, or they're not live in jobs, any other reasons, like, 'They're minimum wage jobs but we can't afford to pay minimum wages' ?

Contact the local dhss office and tell them to send anyone who's been out of work for over a year. Or lose their benefits.

Pretty sure we have 500 unemployed people per day arriving.

Force scroungers on the dole

Wages?

I hope there’s no one “signing on” in the Lake District

Clearly those Brexit sunlit uplands weren't to be found in the Lake District...
