A replica was built in 1752 but was abandoned about 11 years later when England gained control of Spanish St. Augustine.
According to the Fort Mose Historical Society, Africans escaped from enslavement in British colonies and found their way to St. Augustine. Those who reached St. Augustine were granted asylum by the Spanish government. According to the release, the Fort Mose Historical Society set a goal to reconstruct a representation of Fort Mose in the mid-1990s. The project accelerated in 2022 when the Foundation earned a competitive grant of $933,500 from the Florida African American Cultural and Historical Grants Program to aid in construction costs.
