Not everyone has access to enough healthy, affordable and culturally appropriate food. Public markets – like the West Side Market – play a role in addressing that issue.

“I think this is important because we are trying to create awareness around the West Side Market, food access and different food access issues,” says Tanesha Velez, a speaker at the event. Velez is a board member of the non-profit Cleveland Public Market Corporation which was created to manage the West Side Market. And she is the founder of Cleveland Fresh, an urban agriculture operation that focuses on indoor growing, specifically microgreens.

“I think it’s exciting for people to learn more about things going on in the community and food access and how Latinos are being represented,” says Velez, “to learn how important the West Side Market is to the community and the region. And to help understand how it plays a major role into food access.”

The free, but ticketed event will be held at 5:30 p.m., May 16, at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, 13815 Coit Road, Cleveland. Cleveland can do better than that. Cleveland has to do better than that if it wants to remake itself as a place of opportunity, not petty political squabbling, writes the editorial board of The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com.
