Barcelona forward, Asisat Oshoala, is approaching every game for Nigeria at the 2023 Women’s World Cup with a composed mindset, prioritizing her performance over the demands of being in the limelight.

“This is top-level football, and it demands self-reflection. Even if you win the game, you have to ask yourself questions like, ‘Ok, maybe I could be better with the pass’ or whatever,” she said.

With an ardent fan base across Africa, the two-time Champions League winner acknowledges the responsibility she carries as a role model to numerous aspiring youngsters who look up to her. “There are a whole lot of kids out there in Africa who actually look up to me; they tell me ‘you’re my icon, you’re my idol,’ and all of that, so I just keep doing what I’m doing,” she shared with humility.

“That’s why I always say when I play games, I just want to have fun. I want to score goals. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the end.” As Nigeria takes on Australia, Oshoala’s dedication to her craft and commitment to her role model status are set to inspire her team and fans alike, as they strive for excellence on the grandest stage of women’s football. All rights reserved.
