Dr Gabriel Walker believes net zero can only be achieved by eliminating emissions. Atlas Copco is coming up with solutions for global construction companies.

Of all the industries struggling to reach net zero emissions by 2050, construction is one which faces an uphill battle.

Businesses that don’t have environmental targets are now in the minority. Already 92% of global GDP generators now have targets for net zero. Governments and other regulators have also set tight emissions targets – the U.S. target is to reduce emissions by 50% from 2005 – 30, the U.K. 78%. This summer, I watched Atlas Copco launch the world's first portable battery-driven screw compressor to an audience of international customers assembled in Antwerp. There was palpable excitement as the B-Air was unveiled.“What is the lead time for this product?" asked one customer, who had told me the previous evening through a colleague that Chinese construction companies have rigorous electrification targets.

The B-Air can save users up to 140 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 29 passenger cars a year, and offers a massive reduction in noise output. Maximum sound levels are 61 decibels, similar to the spoken voice, while contractors can comfortably work alongside. As it doesn’t produce emissions, fumes don't affect the contractor unlike diesel-powered compressors. There's also a significant gain in reliability - a similar diesel machine might have as many as 100 moving parts.
