The merger between Sainsbury’s and Asda had been thrown into doubt after the competition watchdog raised consumer-based concerns, including higher prices and reduced quality and choice for customers. A provisional verdict on the merger, the CMA said it had found “extensive competition concerns”. In a statement the CMA said the merger would create a “substantial lessening of competition at both a national and local level”.
