Alberta's utilities regulator has released a report stating that the renewables industry poses little threat to agriculture or the environment. The report also mentions the lack of consensus on which landscapes should be protected for their scenic value. The provincial government requested this report as part of its moratorium on approvals for the renewables industry.
The report concludes that even if renewables grew quickly, they would occupy less than one percent of the province's prime land by 2041. It also states that the reclamation and contamination risks for renewable power plants are lower compared to other industries. While there is no consensus on what constitutes a pristine viewscape, the report suggests considering scenic values in the application process
