Chia Siew Yung is confident of causing an upset despite his lack of experience in politics.

Former palm oil company operations manager Chia Siew Yung joining hands in solidarity with his supporters after a press conference to announce his candidacy for the Sandakan parliamentary by-election today.

Chia Siew Yung, a virtual newcomer to politics, said he will contest as an independent candidate for the seat. “Of course, I have confidence in winning. Or else, I would not have quit my job,” he said, adding he had the backing of five NGOs.Once he is Sandakan MP, Chia said he will not take sides and instead remain an independent.

Its president, Mushe Zulkarnain, said Chia did not have to bow down to any political leader because he was not tied to any political party.“No one will direct Chia to do anything that he does not want,” Mushe said, adding Perkesas had about 7,000 members of various races.
