BIBLE HILL, N.S. — It was enjoyable to look back recently at a Bible Hill grocery store that served customers for 56 years, from 1956 to 2012.

Bennie showed me a laminated copy of two pages of the Truro Daily News published August 17, 1960. The business expansion was well covered, and local businesses ran advertisements wishing Lloyd and his staff success. Many grocery specials were well highlighted, including Ground Beef—29 cents a lb., Steak—59 cents a lb., Coffee—65 cents for a lb. bag, and Milk—6 tall tins for 79 cents.

“While with CKCL, Dad listened to a tape of a potential announcer that had been sent over from New Glasgow,” Bennie said. “Dad asked who the emcee on the tape was. It was Frank MacDonald, and right off – Dad wanted this man for the local radio station. Dad hired Frank, an up-and-coming young announcer, and he always said that Frank MacDonald was the best announcer he ever heard.”As a young boy growing up on Avon Street, Bennie was introduced to groceries.

“In 1966, we moved into yet a larger building at 86 Main Street, near College Road,” Bennie recalled. “Dewar’s Garage had been in the building originally; it was a car dealership. I think they sold Studebaker cars first; later, they sold Rambler cars. We closed the store in 2012 when Dad retired at age 89 or 90.”“Oh, my jeepers, I have a barn full of memories from working full-time in the grocery business for 42 years,” Bennie said.
