Sydney's rental market is shrinking for people on welfare | Nigelgladstone

Despite thousands of new units rising into the Sydney rental market, people on the minimum wage remain financially fenced off from many suburbs, and for those reliant on welfare, the market is actually shrinking.

While there were 6504 more rental options than last year, less than one per cent of the 23,921 listings in Greater Sydney and the Illawarra were affordable for people on low incomes. For many people keeping a roof over their head means spending 30 per cent or more of their income on rent, and that puts them into rental stress, Anglicare Sydney CEO Grant Millard said.

"When we started people said Newstart needs to go up by $50," Mr Millard said. "Now they say $70 but there's no commitment from either side to raise it. Everyone believes Newstart is way too low but no one is doing a thing about it.
