The rail industry has called for a new system that ditches franchising in favour of multiple operators on long-distance routes and devolved commuter networks in major cities.
The biggest problem of privatisation is the number of companies fighting with Network Rail, and each other, over whose late trains delayed other companies' late trains, and who should pay. Some train companies make more profit from 'delay minutes' than from carrying passengers.
