A Mpumalanga businesswoman is accusing the police in KaNyamazane outside the City of Mbombela of failing to arrest men who demanded a protection fee from her.
Sweetness Shabangu says the men came to her recycling business site and demanded she pay them to continue with her business. She says she opened a case with the police but the alleged extortionists are still roaming the streets freely. “The first two cases nothing happened at all. In fact what would happen is that whatever that is written on the docket, the perpetrators would know about the information, I don’t trust them I don’t want to hear anything to do with the police in KaNyamazane. A number of people came here and they said to me they are taking over the land field, so I’m supposed to pay but they never mentioned the amount and after that, as I refused to do that, that’s when the threats started coming in.
Meanwhile, the provincial Acting Police Commissioner Zeph Mkhwanazi has confirmed that cases Shabangu opened are being investigated. “Actually, it is three cases that were opened by the business owner in conjunction with the issue because we have even a case of assault GBH and damaged to property that was definitely reported. Both of these cases were opened, the case was referred to the province here, with the office of the Major General Mokuangwe and is busy with that case and I’m very very sure within some time, we would be making an arrest.
