Mobile’s Alabama Shipyard LLC has been chosen to perform maintenance on the U.S. Navy’s new replenishment oiler, the USNS Harvey Milk.

David Campos, left, vice chair of the California Democratic Party, takes a selfie with Nicole Murray-Ramirez, center, an LGBT activist, holding a photo of Harvey Milk, and Bevan Dufty, right, director of the San Francisco Bay area rapid transit district, prior to the launching of the USNS Harvey Milk, a fleet replenishment oiler ship named after the first openly gay elected official, Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021 in San Diego.

A PSA is assigned to correct deficiencies found during the initial cruise of a newly built or activated ship or to accomplish other authorized improvements, according to the Navy website. During PSA, the ship undergoes maintenance to fix anything that broke during rigorous at-sea trials and to complete work left unfinished by the construction yard.

He was assassinated On November 10, 1978 , by fellow City Supervisor, Dan White and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 for his activism. The USNS Harvey Milk is one of the John Lewis class series of oilers, which began construction in 2018 and are all named after prominent civil rights leaders and activists. The class is named for its lead ship, John Lewis, which has been active since 2022.
