Lobby group AfriForum says they invited all political parties opposed to the Basic Education Law Amendment Act to join in their march today.
Scores of AfriForum and Solidarity members descended to the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria to oppose the BELA Act. Both civil organisation groups say that clauses 4 and 5 of the BELA Act take away the right of school governing bodies to make important decisions about admissions and language. AfriForum’s Kallie Kriel says they wanted a broad representation of parties in the Government of National Unity to receive their memorandum.
“Firstly, we invited the Presidency and we invited all Ministers that oppose BELA. We all invited the Education Department and Presidency then indicated that Minister McKenzie would accept it on his behalf. We wanted a broad representation of the Government of National Unity. The Freedom Front, and the DA and the PA are members of the Government of National Unity.
