Non-profit organisation Gift of the Givers says it’s been inundated with calls from residents who are seeking assistance as a result of the bad weather that has hit the Eastern Cape.
This as parts of the province have been experiencing heavy rains. The South African Weather Services issued a level five weather warning for the province.The organisation’s project manager, . “Our team are going to assist over a thousand people affected due to today’s flooding. We have also been called by the Sarah Baartman District Disaster Management teams informing us about the situation in Coega. Communities are currently being evacuated to community halls especially the area of Sea Tide in Humansdorp. We urge communities to watch the water levels and when there are calls to evacuate please evacuate and not to try to leave your homes unnecessarily.
The heavy rains have led to traffic congestion on routes in and out of the metro. Learners writing matric exams were also affected.
