Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on January 10 for his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a hush money scheme related to the 2016 election. While the judge indicated he would likely sentence Trump to a conditional discharge, which could result in the case dismissal if Trump avoids further legal trouble, Trump is still on track to be the first president to assume office while convicted of felonies. Judge Juan M.

Merchan, who presided over Trump's trial, rejected arguments from Trump's lawyers to dismiss the verdict based on presidential immunity or his upcoming return to the White House. Merchan stated that it was his responsibility to sentence Trump before his inauguration on January 20. Trump was found guilty in May for his alleged role in concealing a payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign. He maintains his innocence and claims the accusations are false
