A third-generation fishmonger in Venice's Rialto Markets reflects on the changing landscape of his beloved city. While tourism once supported the local economy, Andrea Vio now faces declining sales as tourists overwhelm the historic market. He highlights the negative impacts of mass tourism on Venice's residents, employment, and traditional ways of life.

For 50 years, Andrea Vio, a third-generation fishmonger, has woken up at 3am and walked through the empty streets to set up his stall at the beating heart of Venice, the Rialto Markets. "Only at that moment can you experience and admire it in the silence, in the stillness, in the peace. Venice is extraordinary," he told me. It used to be a good income but now, sales are down. The fish and produce market that used to feed a city is overrun with tourists.

"The more money this tourism brings, the more we are dependent only on it," he told me. "And that in itself is a negative aspect. How can a person who doesn't want to work in the tourism industry earn a living?" It’s not just about fewer jobs outside of the tourism industry and fewer services available to residents. It also means that ordinary Venetians are being priced out. It took Nina a year to find her rental.
