The community handed the seven-day ultimatum during a peaceful protest by its indigenes comprising women, youths and unemployed graduates.
Indigenes of the community, who displayed placards with different inscriptions, protested over alleged neglect by the two oil firms. The protesters were led by Sunday Oduthe, Richard Ogele, president of the community and youth leader respectively, as well as the Woman Leader, Mrs. Esther Ogele. They demanded that the companies include them in direct employment; empower its women, give scholarship to indigent students as well as build a civic centre amongst other things for them.
At the time of this report, officials of the two companies were yet to address the protesters, and no official statement has been released to the effect.Details later…
