A rice industry group is calling for stricter government regulations on imports. The Bureau of Customs, meanwhile, denies allegations that shipments of rice are undervalued.

LOCAL PRODUCTIVITY DROPPING. Months after the rice tariffication law was passed, industry stakeholders' worst fears have come true as some rice mills halt operations and prefer to import rice instead. File photo by Jire Carreon/RapplerPhilippine Confederation of Grains Associations on Monday, July 29, called for stricter government regulations.

"All ports abide with the said published data except when the commercial invoice of a rice shipment is supported by genuine and validated proof of payment...that [indicates the] actual sales transaction between the seller and the buyer."Due to the unimpeded importation of rice, local industry stakeholders also believe that other industries which rely on rice by-products may be negatively affected too.

The program seeks to give incentives to rice farmers who can produce at least 300 cavans or 15,000 kilograms per hectare of rice.Take discussions to the next level with Rappler PLUS — your platform for deeper insights, closer collaboration, and meaningful action.
