WhatsApp, the encrypted messaging platform owned by Facebook Inc., is suing an Israeli spyware company after the University of Toronto research group Citizen Lab exposed a major digital spying effort targeting the platform earlier this year.

The revelation that as many as 1,400 people were affected, including “attorneys, journalists, human rights activists, political dissidents, diplomats, and other senior foreign government officials,” according to the lawsuit, widens the scope of the alleged surveillance significantly. “The truth is that strongly encrypted platforms are often used by pedophile rings, drug kingpins and terrorists to shield their criminal activity. Without sophisticated technologies, the law enforcement agencies meant to keep us all safe face insurmountable hurdles. NSO’s technologies provide proportionate, lawful solutions to this issue.”“Among the many companies Citizen Lab has tracked, NSO group stands out in terms of the reckless abuse of its spyware by government clients,” Citizen Lab said.
