'Doesn't matter what our last names are. We have to do the work in order to make that a true and authentic experience for the audience,' Hanks said.

“Look this is a family business. This is what we’ve been doing forever. It’s what all of our kids grew up in,” he said. “If we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year.”

Hanks has two children with his first wife — Colin and Elizabeth Hanks — and another two, Chet and Truman, with Wilson. All work in some arm of entertainment to various degrees, whether it be as actors, producers, cinematographers or musicians. Hank noted that regardless of their last name, for him, it’s ultimately the quality of their work that matters most and speaks the loudest.

“The thing that doesn’t change no matter what happens, no matter what your last name is, is whether it works or not,” he said. “That’s the issue anytime any of us go off and try to tell a fresh story or create something that has a beginning and a middle and an end. Doesn’t matter what our last names are. We have to do the work in order to make that a true and authentic experience for the audience.

For Hanks, “that’s a much bigger task than worrying about whether anybody’s going to try to scathe us or not.”

Used to actually like him now, 🤮. Would never watch him again, he’s just another one of the demons

Slow news day?

I grew up in a film family... Yes it got me on a set and a foot in the door but 37 years later I am still having to prove myself and do a good job everyday. I never got handed anything and never stumbled into big jobs becuase of it...

If you grow up in a culture than you will just be better at it. If you didn’t grow up in it you can still succeed, you just have to work extra hard. Like Tom Hanks did.

What is it with his neck. Mask is slipping!

Like nepotism is something new every damn body in Hollywood is related to someone out there. So if you go there don't be running your mouth about anybody because they will hear about it

Isn't nepotism limiting vertical mobility? Keeping plumber family in the plumber biz of course suits everyone not being a plumber. Isn't hollywood about opportunity and how much is it there, if leading roles are hereditary?

Chet Hanks can never be a nepo baby when he’s an island boy

What is the big deal?! Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Robert Downey Jr, Nicolas Cage, etc. it’s not new. Children follow their parents in business too. So is a family run restaurant a problem too?

Tom Hanks is Balenciaga biggest customer

He should weigh into the debate on pizza 🍕 as rumours say he’s an expert.

Nepotism literaly happens in every business. If I had a business I’d also pass it to my children if they were interested.

If others people get chances but if the industry full of those star kids then it is a problem

I can’t stand him

Its not a debate It just is

Go back to Greece.

His son absolutely hates him.

Listen, making fun of nepotism babies is fair game but it'd be a bald-faced lie if you said you wouldn't help your own kid get a leg up in your business if you had the chance. It'd be ridiculous not to leverage your own success & connections to help your kid succeed.

He’s so full of 💩

How hard is it for celebs to just admit that nepotism has definitely helped get them started in Hollywood. Not saying they’re talentless, just that they got a chance others with a different last name would never. Props to Allison Williams acknowledge that at least.

That’s what nepotism means..

People always need something to complain about.

Colin Hanks is a good actor. In fact, I wish he had a more successful career than he did.

Clearly…

Let Joe Hill be the benchmark. He became an established writer before people realised he is Stephen King's son.

Fair.

Eh, most industries for virtually as long as civilization has been around have seen many generations of the same family. I'm only really against it if the person in question is completely unqualified/ineffective in their position and only received the job bc of their parents.

Hanks is a middling actor, so his children? Yeah, not great.

His son is so talented though

If they get the job done who cares, every business has some form of nepotism involved.

Fair enough, Tom, but they shouldn't be presented to the masses as these generational, once in the lifetime talents when it's actually mommy and daddy calling in favors.

Honestly, who cares? If they’re good they deserve it and if they’re not, they’ll putter around getting dumb bit parts after they flame out. can you think of a case of nepotism resulting in a big star who isn’t super talented?

As a writer and singer with zero connections, I feel a bit bitter about nepotism sometimes; however, most of these generational actors are actually talented. The parent’s name gets the door open, but if you aren’t competent the door is going to shut.

All celebs are fucking children. Not only do they need money, fame and attention, they also need you to think they are super hard workers and earned everything AND that their kids did too.

Yeah that's the definition of nepotism.

At least he’s shamelessly honest, I guess

So was monarchy, Tom.

Him and Jamie Lee are pretty insecure, huh?

Why the golden age of Hollywood died…fewer and fewer stars that came from nothing & nowhere.

Honestly, who cares ... I just want to see good acting.

Chet Hanks is the real

Have them start out writing, producing, and acting in their own short films, submit them with pseudonyms to film festivals, like every other hard working artist, and see how long their 'business' lasts.

Yes but it was Tom Hanks name who got them the opportunity to 'work hard' in the first place🙄

So a 100% full-throated admission.
