by Hallie JacobsThe Swatara township’s Board of Commissioners voted to remove the Friendship Fire Company of Bressler and its social club as a Fire and Rescue Emergency Service Provider on Wednesday night.
In 2020 and 2021, there were allegations from a member of the fire company and a local business owner that the Friendship Fire Company of Bressler has a policy allowing only white members to join both the fire company and its social club. “Any time you close a firehouse fire protection in this township is affected,” said a community member. “If you sit up there in good conscience and say it’s not, you’re lying to yourselves and you’re lying to the residents that you say you serve.”
Nonetheless, even some members of the board said the vote felt rushed, while others held steadfast in their vote.
