Southern Company reports billion dollar profit in 2nd quarter

On a per-share basis, the Atlanta-based company said it had net income of $1.09 billion.Jennifer Finch and Kayla Woolwine, both Alabama Power customers, reached out to ABC 33/40 regarding their concern with rising power bill costs from Alabama Power.Finch is on budget billing and seeing rising costs that Alabama power tells her is due to the higher than usual power bill customers saw in January, during the cold weather.

"During the second quarter, we experienced higher-than-expected weather-adjusted electricity sales in our commercial customer class. These higher sales were driven by a combination of continued strength in our local economies, as well as increased usage by many of our existing data center customers," said Daniel Tucket, executive VP & CFO with Southern Company.
