The Amazon's Choice badge, which appears on select product listings on Amazon's marketplace, has been applied to items that violate the marketplace's policies, products from merchants that game the selection process' algorithm, and many of Amazon's own products, Products are given the badge based on algorithms and reportedly other processes, with the algorithms considering factors like popularity, availability, reviews, and price.
The WSJ found products with the Amazon's Choice badge that were missing certifications and likely violated other rules. It identified "dozens" of products with issues, like phone chargers that claimed to be certified by Apple but weren't, a drink that contained a prescription-only drug, and a toy that said it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration even though the FDA doesn't approve toys.
