Meeting your travel and your financial goals this year aren't mutually exclusive

. That's just one of countless ways travel rewards can help you enjoy travel by slashing your out-of-pocket costs.

As we ring in a new year and a new decade, it's the perfect time to find a balance between traveling more without sacrificing your budget. If you've decided to travel more this year, you need to take advantage of points and miles. In fact, doing so should be your 2020 resolution.Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these credit cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which will far outweigh the value of any points or miles.

Before you start your travel rewards adventure, it is a good idea to have some destinations in mind. There are a variety of loyalty programs associated with rewards credit cards, and the best option for you will depend on where you want to go, and the airline options for getting you there.Once you have an idea of where you want your travels to take you this year, consider opening a travel rewards credit card that earns you points that can get you to your destination.

Never spend more than you can afford to pay off in the pursuit of earning travel rewards. The only way you'll come out ahead is if you pay off your balances in full to avoid interest rates. If you're not in a position to take advantage of rewards cards, focus on paying down your debt instead —
