Vaccine trial in SA fails to show efficacy in HIV prevention

The Department of Health says it is disappointed that a large-scaleThe HVTN 702 trial was the largest and most advanced HIV vaccine trial to take place in South Africa, a country with the largest HIV epidemic in the world.“This trial reinforces the fact that we must continue to look for a vaccine to prevent new infections.

While researchers are searching for a vaccine we must do everything we can to prevent new infections, which means condomising, using pre-exposure prophylaxis, sticking to one partner at a time, etc. We look forward to the results of the other two trials that are currently taking place in SA,” says the Health Department’s Deputy Director-General for HIV/AIDS, Doctor Yogan Pillay.
