Australia's stock market has surprised investors after opening up almost two per cent despite futures predicting a loss of four per cent off the back of a 13 per cent US market plunge on Tuesday morning.

The positive rise was attributed to an announcement by US President Donald Trump his administration would provide financial support to the airline industry. Qantas also announced it would reduce international flights by 90 per cent and cut back on domestic travel by 60 per cent. Image: Getty
