For those of us with a business where it’s a realistic option, telecommuting must be an option, and we have to accept that during this time, productivity is probably going to go down. Schools are closed; your staff has to take care of bored, restless, and frightened children while ensuring they stay healthy. We need to take this incredibly seriously, recognizing that nobody chose this, and we are all coping as best we can.
But for millions of workers, telecommuting simply isn’t an option. Wait staff, cooks, movie theater workers, bartenders, and retail clerks instead suffer the loss of their primary source of income entirely as their employers close their doors for the duration. As business leaders, it’s up to us to make sure they’re secure, because there aren’t other options, and while New York City has a moratorium on evictions, not every city has that in place.
Those of us with political clout have an special obligation to prod the government into taking firmer action on paid leave, healthcare, and housing. Nobody should face eviction right now; the homeless population is large enough and is already particularly vulnerable and a potential disease vector due to their lack of basic resources and shelter and their inability to socially isolate.
This is a rapidly developing situation, far faster than we had anticipated it would be. We have limited time, and we don’t even know how limited. That demands leadership; it demands immediate action on our part to do what we can to mitigate the spread and to help our communities.
This is a challenge, but I believe it’s one we’re up to. I believe we can cushion the impact for American workers and, ultimately, for ourselves as well. Calvin Coolidge said the business of America is business; right now, the best business move we can make is to do what we can to keep people healthy, housed, and fed, so that we can all get back to normal as soon as possible and come out stronger together.
