the COVID-19 outbreak had left the Australian business sector vulnerable to predatory behaviour by "foreign state-owned enterprises working contrary to our national interest".
Victorian Liberal MP Tim Wilson, who also sits on the intelligence and security committee, said FIRB approval may need to be more broadly interpreted to keep some businesses and assets from being "preyed upon as an easy out" during the COVID-19 outbreak. The current thresholds for referral to the FIRB include $15 million for agricultural land and $60 million for agribusinesses.
"I can see why people are nervy about telco assets and energy assets ... but the bulk of assets which are going to be discounted at the moment are retail businesses, and if someone from China wants to buy a chain of hairdressers or a retailer, then good luck to them," he said.
ScottMorrisonMP Read ... anybody but Chinese.
ScottMorrisonMP How about having a clear plan of what are our core assets that can not be sold to ANY foreign investors. At the same time think about how to stimulate local economy help businesses owners in need so nothing need to be sold to begin with? Need a solution not a patch
ScottMorrisonMP We are a banana republic. What China wants it gets.
ScottMorrisonMP Well isn’t that just the icing on the neo liberal shit cake.
ScottMorrisonMP banforigentakeovers protect our business now
ScottMorrisonMP Hahahahaha
ScottMorrisonMP What’s the governments plan on how they will manage the spike in infections once the restrictions are relaxed. This virus isn’t leaving us, so are we increasing bed numbers, buying more equipment, training doctors. So far its just isolate and hope it goes away - it wont......
ScottMorrisonMP What do you mean I thought that was already the case wont be long now the Bruce highway will be part of the belt road our mob were the first to witness a foreign takeover. is the current position to allow billionaires to take over mining leases or cattle on your property .
ScottMorrisonMP Josh is looking (and sounding 🤔) more and more like Burt Newton every day.
ScottMorrisonMP Ban foreign purchases of any kind in Australia!
ScottMorrisonMP Don’t underestimate the long term effects of this, if we become a more unified Australia as a result, there should be a fortress Australia mentality in protecting all our Citizens, including the national interest and promoting and not selling out Australia.
ScottMorrisonMP Should not have so easy with selling off assets in the first place
ScottMorrisonMP NO!
ScottMorrisonMP I dont know what your concern is at the age...morrison and the govt will do very well out of this...i kid you not!
ScottMorrisonMP This government won’t do anything about this situation “ just like the governments before it they both contributed to selling of the farm 💀
ScottMorrisonMP They already let them in! Best thing to do now is close the gate and just stop them.
ScottMorrisonMP That's how US style capitalism works.
ScottMorrisonMP Shouldn’t a moratorium on foreign investment be declared until the pandemic is over? Shouldn’t all the gov effort be focusing on leading the nation through this crisis with the least damage to everything possible? Why ate we wasting resources on this now? Stop it.
ScottMorrisonMP Really? First you want them to invest here in millions, now you tell them they can not buy anything here? Is our government ready to say goodbye to all the agricultural, education, tourism and mining export business to China as well?
ScottMorrisonMP Think about Alinta Energy and all the problems that has raised. Our kids won’t have a future if hard decisions now are not made on this issue.
ScottMorrisonMP That’s why China released this virus in the first place. They know we will cave in and let them buy businesses and property. As long as they keep funding our universities in return....
ScottMorrisonMP There is growing concern about this government’s ability to handle anything outside of rorts and lying. CrimeMinisterMorrison
ScottMorrisonMP
ScottMorrisonMP Simple buy a Declined stamp.
ScottMorrisonMP Bad luck. That is professional business risk. Better finally provide financial support to Australians instead of giving false promises and worrying about foreigners. What a shame for the minister.
ScottMorrisonMP Hefty Overseas Buyers tax simple
ScottMorrisonMP You don’t need tanks to invade a country
ScottMorrisonMP We cannot allow this to happen!! I have been assessing this looming risk for several months now and believe that I may have a solution. Who can I speak to in government?
ScottMorrisonMP Yah yah yah, good timing to change the subject.
ScottMorrisonMP I’d say the horse has bolted.
ScottMorrisonMP Master plan - Dan A just borrowed $ from China - what did they ask in return - brace yrselves - the new order is here to stay and they no it coz we are weak as piss -
ScottMorrisonMP Chinese owned companies in Australia MUST not get bailed out by Australian taxpayers
ScottMorrisonMP No business should be sold to China or anyone else. Until the economy is stable again , there is no reference of worth. Cash grabbing is the moronic behaviour I’d expect from this government.
ScottMorrisonMP Oh great! Something else to worry about! No buy in’s. Easy.
ScottMorrisonMP STOP IT. IT'S UNAUSTRALIAN
ScottMorrisonMP Agree, no foreign investment, keep the vultures out. While you're at it Scomo, send China a reparations bill for the damages incurred.
ScottMorrisonMP These Fwits will let China take it all.. After this outbreak, we should be done with China! But will never happen. Once the dust settles, we will be up their arse again! Makes me sick!!!!!
ScottMorrisonMP If ScottMorrisonMP aus_politics dont see this WuhanVirus as a form of terrorism by china then australia and the greater pacific region are in a whole heap of trouble covid19australia
ScottMorrisonMP Change the laws. Back date if need be.
ScottMorrisonMP Australia is Chinas outpost . The politically correct have helped fuel the fire & neither side of politics took a stand . The Chinese albino dentist will likely be celebrating. China bent us over & we only asked how hard are getting it
ScottMorrisonMP Just say NO to Chinese and other foreign takeovers!!! Assets should stay in Australian hands.
ScottMorrisonMP Frydenberg won’t care who owns them if it means his bottom line looks okay - it was happening before the virus, it will only ramp up now
ScottMorrisonMP Well played China. Well played. BanChina BlockChina
ScottMorrisonMP ☝️☝️This bloke will walk straight into the trap.
ScottMorrisonMP Chinese students have been foreshadowing this!
ScottMorrisonMP The reason we kept borders open as long we did was to not bite the hand that feeds us. China/US have too much control in our decision making processes bc of our dependence on their money. This is the time to bring back independence to Australian businesses.
ScottMorrisonMP China will pick at the bones of our economy, a well perpetrated take over without a shot fired in anger. North Korea had advanced warning with zero cases the result.
ScottMorrisonMP Moratorium on ALL foreign takeovers. auspol
ScottMorrisonMP Stop them
ScottMorrisonMP All part of China’s plan
ScottMorrisonMP Simple, don’t allow them
ScottMorrisonMP It’s pretty simple don’t allow it
ScottMorrisonMP Don’t want to have another port of Australia sold to a foreign power. Save our infrastructure
ScottMorrisonMP Just do what any other law abiding foreign actor would do under the circumstances - take the money, then make up a law that compulsorily acquires the business back, simples
ScottMorrisonMP Put a moratorium all foreign buyouts. But then you have the problem of Australian Chinese citizens buying for China as well
ScottMorrisonMP That would be implying these corporately-owned political leeches didn't carve up Australia and sell it off to the highest bidder decades ago. There's nothing left to protect.
