Unemployment benefits are determined by state, but the federal government is adding $600 per week to benefits until July 31

from April 5, 2020 until July 31, 2020. The law also gives unemployment benefits to many who wouldn't usually have them, including gig workers who aren't classified as employees.

That additional money is nearly double what the average unemployed American would receive otherwise. According to, the average unemployment benefit in America was $387. Unemployment benefits range widely by state. The maximum benefit in Massachussetts is over $1,800 per week, but Alabama's maximum is $875 per week, including the federal benefit. While sometimes based on cost of living, it's not always closely aligned: An unemployed person in expensive California might receive a maximum of $1,050 per week , but a person in Nebraska might receive up to $1,040.
