UBS analysts have been conducting a biweekly survey of 1,000 consumers. Consumers were asked a series of questions about their upcoming shopping plans, including: "In the next week, which physical stores of the following retailers do you intend to visit, if any?" The most recent survey was conducted between April 24 and 26.
Notably, more people said they would be visiting these dollar stores in the upcoming week than those who said they would go to Target and Kroger, both of which have been popular destinations as people stock up on food supplies amid the pandemic. Both Target and Kroger fell down the list of stores shoppers planned to visit when compared to the week before.
"Dollar stores have likely gained from fill-in trips given the combo of value & convenience they offer," the UBS analysts wrote. , which measures foot traffic using aggregated data from mobile devices, found that dollar stores saw the expected drop in foot traffic during the third week of March, after President Donald Trump declared a national state of emergency and many states enacted stay-at-home restrictions.
