The impact of Covid-19 in the horse racing industry has forced owners to take difficult decisions which include massive retrenchments of workers and killing of horses due to high costs associated with their maintenance.

08 May 2020 - 13:28The impact of Covid-19 on the horse racing industry has forced owners to take difficult decisions about retrenchments and euthanising horses.horse racing faces a dire financial crisis with 60,000 jobs on the line and desperate owners turning to euthanasia as the industry is hammered by the lockdown.

Freeman said the government had permitted horse owners to train horses daily but racing activities were banned. horse racing, generated hundreds of millions of rand for the hospitality industry and in taxes for the government. NHA racing administrator executive Hazel Kayiya said breeders had been badly affected by the lockdown.
