An eBay exec and former Walmart VP reveals his predictions for how the pandemic will forever change e-commerce and retail

eBay's SVP of North America Jordan Sweetnam said that the pandemic has accelerated the trends that were already changing e-commerce and retail.

"I don't know ultimately how this unfolds," Sweetnam said. "But I do think that fundamentally this is going to have ramifications for even e-commerce well past the moment where we theoretically return to work and start shopping."The pandemic has likely irrevocably shifted consumer behavior online and in person. And as more businesses shift focus to online sales, the future of retail and e-commerce is in question.

"I don't know ultimately how this unfolds," said Sweetnam, who came to eBay after a three-and-a-half-year stint at Walmart. "But I do think that fundamentally this is going to have ramifications for even e-commerce well past the moment where we theoretically return to work and start shopping. It's just accelerated a bunch of trends that will forever change the direction of e-comm.

"I think it will fundamentally change the nature of how teams can collaborate remotely," Sweetnam said, explaining how jumping into a 100% remote work situation at eBay required some adjustment for everyone. "I don't have the answer to it, but its been fascinating to watch our organization just adapt to how all of this has been unfolding."
