The NHS study speaks to the growing demand for VR in healthcare to reduce training costs and facilitate remote learning

Virti provided virtual instruction for clinical tasks related to treatment of the coronavirus, such as how to properly wash hands, use personal protective equipment, and resuscitate a patient. The control group was trained using in-person traditional instruction. The participants were then graded on their ability to perform tasks post-training: Those trained with VR successfully performed 92% of the infection control tasks, compared with a 16% success rate in the control group.

Though I [Hirsh] believe the study employed questionable methodology, it nevertheless speaks to the growing demand for VR in healthcare to reduce training costs and facilitate remote learning. The factors imposed on the control group in this study — specifically, what constitutes the "traditional" instruction provided to the group — have significant influence over training outcomes.

The fact that only 16% of those in the control group were able to successfully perform the most basic infection control measures such as proper handwashing casts doubt on the nature and quality of the training they received. The study still conveys a useful finding, however, in demonstrating that VR can be used to achieve desirable learning outcomes. Perhaps more important, it speaks to the desire among providers for VR training in healthcare.

The study conducted by the NHS and Virti estimates that switching to VR training could yield $2,800 in annual savings per clinician, which would come in the form of reduced training costs, productivity gains, and reduced stress. Keep in mind that this is just an estimate, and should be taken with a grain or two of salt given the data on which it's based.
