Opinion | Democrats may beat Trump in November and still not learn the most important lesson from his presidency

President Richard Nixon, vice presidential nominee Gerald R. Ford, and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office, October 13, 1973.President Donald Trump has been cast as unique in US political history for the nature and extent of his misdeeds. But his election owes much to the impunity US elites have long had for such malfeasance

In 1968, Robert McNamara, who was secretary of defense under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and one of the architects of the disastrous war in Vietnam, moved from his position in the government to become president of the World Bank. One year later, Walt Whitman Rostow, who also worked under Kennedy and Johnson and likewise helped destroy Vietnam, left his government job for a cushy position as a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Lt. Col. Oliver North is sworn in before the Iran-Contra Committee prior to his testimony in Washington, DC, July 7, 1987.Over the next several decades, elite-level policymakers routinely escaped accountability for their crimes. Elliot Abrams, US special adviser for Venezuela, listens to questions from reporters in Lisbon, April 9, 2019.While not especially punitive, these convictions seemed to indicate that when officials broke the law, there would be consequences. However, events soon demonstrated that elite decision-makers would not be held wholly accountable for their crimes.
