Choom — a publicly traded Vancouver company that describes itself as “one of the largest national retail networks in Canada” for cannabis — had sought to open a weed store on the 500-block of Bute Street, but the city rejected it because it the proposed location was too close to an already operating dispensary and a community centre.

The Postmedia story came up during Choom’s board of variance hearing on Tuesday, where all five board members unanimously voted to disallow the appeal, said Louis Ng, secretary to the board of variance. The letters in the appeal package “were incomplete, vague, did not include business owners, and/or used corporate logos without permission,” said Choom’s letter, which was signed from “The office of the CEO.”Article content continuedChoom has said the letters in question were produced by a third-party consultant hired to canvass on the company’s behalf to get letters of support before the board of variance meeting.

“Unfortunately, this incident overshadowed Choom’s strong, factual case to bring access to safe and legal cannabis to the community of Coal Harbour,” Hinan said. “This area continues to be underserved by legal cannabis providers, which was further highlighted through the politicization of the issue at hand.”Now, following an “internal review,” she said, Choom is reviewing its community engagement practices and has “severed all ties with Ashley Hughes.
