You don't often get to know much about how your financial planner manages their money. It's kind of like therapy — you tell your therapist all kinds of stuff, but you don't really learn much about them

Once I was a few years into being a working parent and realized just how much I wanted to continue working , we chose to continue budgeting on my husband's income so that we could use my income to make faster progress on our goals. It gave me a ton of satisfaction knowing that my income was helping us save for retirement, send our kids to college, and save for a home after we relocated to Santa Barbara.

My husband is max-funding his 401 at work as well. We've set up his contribution as a dollar amount rather than a percentage so that he doesn't accidentally max out his account early andSome 401 plans offer the ability to make after-tax contributions above and beyond the $19,500 limit, which is especially useful if the plan also offers in-plan Roth conversions on those dollars. My husband's plan doesn't offer those features, but if it did, we'd be all over it.
