The government will not appeal the Federal Court's ruling which declared the former Gillard government's live export ban illegal.

The government will not appeal the Federal Court's ruling which declared the former Gillard government's live export ban illegal. Labor introduced the blanket ban on live exports in 2011 after an ABC report showed mistreatment of Australian cattle in some Indonesian abattoirs. Attorney-General Christian Porter said "live cattle exporters were dealt with egregiously by the Gillard government” when it made the 2011 decision.

"We don’t ever want to see governments of any persuasion have the ability to make decisions like this again,” she said. Nationals Senator Matt Canavan welcomed the decision, telling Sky News “it’s certainly not about the money for most of the cattle producers, they want that justification for their livelihoods”. “They want to know that governments can’t make overnight decisions, knee-jerk decisions to shut down their livelihoods without proper reasons for doing so,” he said.

High COVID welfare essentially created a ‘floor price’ in the wages market | Sky News AustraliaThe federal government’s recalibration of JobKeeper and JobSeeker recognises high rates of income support can create a deterrence for people going to look for work, according to Social Services Minister Anne Ruston.\n\nJobSeeker payments will be slashed to $815 a fortnight from September as the Coalition moves to keep COVID-19 support payments until at least the end of the year. \n\nPrime Minister Scott Morrison also announced JobKeeper support would be reduced to $1200 per fortnight towards the end of September with a lower payment of $750 for those working less than 20 hours per week.\n\nMinister Ruston said the Treasury Department’s review into JobKeeper uncovered how the payments may have provided essentially a “floor price in the wages market”.\n\n“This is preventing or stopping people looking for work,” she told Sky News host Chris Kenny.\n\n“It’s about trying to maintain a balance between the level of support that’s needed given the circumstances we find ourselves in.\n\n“But also recognising if you have high levels of support out there that are creating a deterrent for people going to work then that’s also a negative thing for the economy.”\n\nImage: Getty Anne_Ruston Written and authorised by Chris Kenny for the Australian Liberal Party, Canberra.
