Apple's new iPhone operating system is making it harder for Facebook to track people, and Facebook warns it will decimate part of its business

, its upcoming mobile operating system. Apple intends to prevent apps from tracking users using their unique device identifier without their explicit permission — something that Facebook's Audience Network uses to personalize advertising in third-party apps.

Facebook says that doing so will have a significant impact on Audience Network, cutting its revenues on iOS by up to 50% because of its inability to deliver more valuable, targeted advertising. It may even force Facebook to stop developing Audience Network for iOS altogether, the company said. "This is not a change we want to make, but unfortunately Apple's updates to iOS 14 have forced this decision. We know this may severely impact publishers' ability to monetize through Audience Network on iOS 14, and, despite our best efforts, may render Audience Network so ineffective on iOS 14 that it may not make sense to offer it on iOS 14 in the future," it wrote in its blog post.

Audience Network is only one piece of Facebook's revenue , and its core business of advertising inside its own apps will be unaffected. But any attempt to curtail data collection can pose a threat to Facebook, and the company has been vocal recently about the risks that regulators and platform changes pose.

It's an argument that Facebook reiterated in its Wednesday blog post: "We understand that iOS 14 will hurt many of our developers and publishers at an already difficult time for businesses. We work with more than 19,000 developers and publishers from around the globe and in 2019 we paid out billions of dollars. Many of these are small businesses that depend on ads to support their livelihood.

Awesome! The hell with facebook Good job Apple

Tough shit. Go out of business.

Unjust enrichment and illegal business is a part of their real business. Facebook should pay for my IP. I do not care what Germans allow. My IP does not belong to them.

Open settings. Apps Facebook Uninstall Life improves instantly.

Mara Mark.. It's always Profits over Privacy

Meanwhile Facebook stock continues to skyrocket.

🍎 is really luring me here

Yay apple 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

facebook can fck off. thier data protection record is disgusting.

One word: xkeyscore.

Fk mark Zuckerberg

Bien por apple, de verdad que el bombardeo de publicidad de esta yendo de las manos

Liars. Let it be independently verified by 3rd party security auditor.

The folks on this thread that think Apple is just “helping protect its customers privacy”, have another thing coming. Apple is just looking for a way to monopolize the ad market on their apps. Your target ads, based on data collection, is just going to another company.

facebookapp is highly intrusive. I've deleted it from my Android phone Google you must follow the example set by Apple and make it difficult for apps like Facebook to breach our privacy DeleteFacebook

Just another reason to get iPhone.

Fucking good.

This sounds excellent. Good for Apple.

Aww.. Diddums

Thanks Apple!!!

Good for Apple. Never cared much for either, but Zuckerberg is a greedy menace and a danger to all.

Thanks Apple 🤙🏼

Hahaha like selling the data to the sham propaganda effort from the WH that the Russians are running?

Google take a hint.

Apple is at least a lil better off than t rest . Deleted FB already . Each individual shld have t right to decide how their data shld be used GDPR ccpa

Facebook is going to stave for data

His eyes are hypnotising

Thankful that I’m an Apple user right now. Facebook’s too focused on monetary gains and its neutrality on current issues makes me wonder if they care anything more than monies.

If the geniuses at Facebook are using this as an argument to convince Apple, judges etc, they should be fired as soon as possible. There must not be a single person on the planet (except Fbook execs+shareholders) not thinking 'GOOD!' as a reaction to this... 😆

An apple in a day keeps the Facebook away.

Good

Excellent news!! DeleteFacebook

Sounds like a new and exciting feature for iPhones.

Sucks to Zucc

armsivilli If this isn't a solid reason to buy Apple stuff, I don't know what is.

oh noes

You can already block them from following you, by denying them your location access, access to your contacts, and access to your other random personal data. That, or get a Facebook Container.

Apple is becoming more and more monopolistic in it approach.

getting an iphone now

what a photo to use

Good on Apple.

Good
