Amid Intel's 7nm chip delay, China will likely leapfrog the US to be the world's first computer to reach the exascale computational threshold

by the US military, as of early 2020, the US only had a modest lead over China in regard to AI technology. The study attributed the US' lead to its still-sizable advantage in the semiconductor industry, as Chinese firms still largely depend on designs from US companies and manufacturing from South Korean and Taiwanese firms.

The report also emphasized the centrality of AI to US military strategy, as it asserts that the "the long-term prospects for DoD [Department of Defense] to maintain a lead over the Chinese military in AI-enabled systems, weapons, and operational concepts will, at least indirectly, depend on the ability of the United States to keep its edge over China in AI at the national level."

This dynamic, along with the rather visible setback of Aurora, means that the US will likely significantly increase subsidies going toward tech companies for AI R&D. Just this week, the Trump administration
