A VC investor talks about why she left her high-profile law career — including a stint as Google's second ever legal hire — for the world of funding buzzy startups

Miriam Rivera, co-founder and managing partner of Ulu Ventures, spoke with Business Insider about her career path from lawyer to VC investor — and the diversity challenges along the way.Miriam Rivera left her prestigious jobs as associate at a large law firm and deputy general counsel of Google to launch the San Francisco-based venture fund, Ulu Ventures.

"It was a real boost at a time when I grew up in an environment where I was more likely to be told that I'd be 16, pregnant, and on food stamps, than to be told I should go to law school," said Rivera, who grew up in Chicago in a predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood, where gangs, drugs, and prostitution were embedded into daily life., an early seed-stage venture fund that she co-founded in 2008.

"It would've been risky if it hadn't been for the time that I was living in, where there were so many opportunities in Silicon Valley where I could switch positions quickly."When she was an associate at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, a large San Francisco-based firm that, Rivera encountered instances that made her "think twice" about remaining at a law firm.

Rivera was connected to executive members of Google in 2001 by a former colleague, and was offered the position of senior corporate counsel shortly after.
