Editorial: If there is a silver lining to the coronavirus cloud it is that Australian business has found its voice again.

If there is a silver lining to the coronavirus cloud it is that Australian business has found its voice again. Much like the federal political class which squandered the 2010s through a series of leadership coups and petty policy divisions, our business leaders are emerging from a lost decade marred by the bad behaviour of the banks, bullying by supermarket chains and general disagreement over climate and energy policy.

Corporate Australia has demonstrated an ability not just to work with governments during a crisis but a desire to engage in important national conversations about health and economic prosperity.holds its inaugural Sustainability Summit today. A much overused word, sustainability aims to achieve the goal of meeting community needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

The summit features federal environment minister Sussan Ley and her state counterpart, Matt Kean, who will releasewhich highlights the economic opportunities of hydrogen. Warning there is risk NSW becomes a “rust-bucket state” if it does not move quickly, Mr Kean will argue we cannot find ourselves “on the wrong side of megatrends such as rising carbon-based protectionism while other economies steal our march in new clean technologies and industries”.

A sense of urgency is critical. Australia only recycles 12 per cent of plastics with the rest going into landfill; while climate experts say we are likely to miss our unambitious 2030 national carbon emissions reduction target despite political rhetoric that meets them “in a canter”.This is where business must step up.

The guests invited to share their experiences in discussion at the summit are just some of the many industry leaders who are making significant strides in job creation, leadership and knowledge-sharing to improve and expand sustainable business practices.hopes that corporate Australia continues to recognise it is no longer faced with a choice between running successful businesses and taking care of the planet. It can be rewarded for doing both.
