After a car crash without insurance threw him into a debt spiral, Royce Kurmelovs started investigating the 'great Australian debt trap' and our complicated relationship with money.

His car spun out into three lanes of traffic.

"It was a perfectly ordinary day to be quite frank and it was also possibly one of the worst in my life," he says. The crash would push his personal finances to the brink, open his eyes to our complicated relationship with money, and ultimately … see him writing a book about debt, in part to get out of debt.A police officer asked in a hopeful tone — did he have insurance?tells ABC RN's Saturday ExtraThe Adelaide-based freelance journalist and author says he still finds it hard, and embarrassing, to explain why he didn't have insurance.

"Many people are in similar situations. With car accidents, in particular, people sometimes miss a payment or forget to renew their cover. Something's going on in their life and people just don't sign up.He thinks the embarrassment he felt has a lot to do with the way our society views debt. "The way we talk and think about debt has an incredibly long history … there's a sense of guilt associated with it and that's hardwired into our language."

Just what people need. Another excuse to be irresponsible.

I was a student living on newstart and I had my car insured. This guy is just an irresponsible twat.

Are you sure that's not David O'Doherty

Most reputable finance companies will work with you if hardship hits you. The most important thing is to get onto them straight away and tell them. Once you start missing payments is when the trouble begins

. Personal finances is indeed simple to manage - it's not complex - the system isn't complex - anyone can do it easily. Is this story just an ad for insurance? Maybe we should all get together and run a fund to self-insure each other - we can call it the Govt Insurance Office.

the insurance company in Australia are the biggest fraudster when compared to how insurance works well in many parts of the globe..the problem is a programme like today tonight and insight or current affairs never tell Australian how things work well in other countries.

It really is a matter of being a good neighbour and citizen to insure yourself. Commonsense really.

Sounds like a sob story by someone too cheap to insure himself
