Ski resorts and amusement parks are facing hiring hurdles this year after the Trump administration’s ban on several work-based visa types

GATLINBURG, Tenn.—Jerry Huskey, a senior staff member at Ober Gatlinburg, spent his summer struggling to hire enough staff to operate its amusement park and he is dreading the same challenge as the winter ski season approaches.

Lockdowns and travel restrictions because of the coronavirus pandemic created one set of hiring hurdles this year; Washington created others. In June, President Trump banned severalthrough the end of the year, including the J-1 and H-2B programs for seasonal foreign workers, with the aim of safeguarding any open jobs for Americans.

Recruiting those U.S. workers, however, proved difficult this summer because the seasonal jobs aren’t permanent, affordable housing is hard to find, and, in some locations, there simply aren’t enough workers available, business leaders say. The enhanced unemployment benefits approved by Congress and the White House this summer also meant American workers could make more money staying at home rather than taking a temporary job.

On a July afternoon in Gatlinburg, a parade of cars with out-of-state license plates inched along Parkway, the city’s busy commercial strip. Yet with a total population of just 4,000 residents, Ober Gatlinburg and other businesses couldn’t fill all the jobs needed during the bustling summer. One restaurant that was closed in early July left a note on its door citing staffing issues, while others staked “Always Hiring” signs out front.

Shouldn’t be a hurdle. More jobs for American citizens. Trump 2020

I hope these places are able to recover from these big changes.

This gonna hit Aussies pretty hard.

WSJ, your immigration opinions are retrograde, damaging to the people of this country. Please stuff a sock into it until after the election. Then trumpet stupidity to your heart's content.

modern day slave wages

Hire unemployed Americans

Take away the ability for able bodied individuals to collect social welfare via wealth redistribution & voila, you’ll magically have a new, suddenly inspired worker base to fill said jobs!

Ski resorts have a lot bigger issues than than hiring foreign workers. I hear there is a thing called Covid that thrives in close contact. Good luck on a gondola, lift line, restaurant...

Well maybe they will have to pay a little bit better and get real citizens to work for them?

Their clients arent worth the trouble

Simple solution, hire American workers.

why are they hiring

The one constant is WSJ works against America and sucks ass

If the economy is so good and wages are sufficient, why do we rely on cheap labor from other countries! Why aren't Americans lining up to do these jobs? Scratching my head in wonder?

WTF, why do we need foreign workers at ski resorts? Hire our younger adults. Get to work! Primary reason the millennials have no life skills...they never worked Foreign and illegal workers have decimated the teen and college working class of Americans.

Hire Americans. Problem solved.

Sounds like the policy is having the intended effect.

Uhh yeah the hurdle is Hire American.

The good news is that with 8% unemployment there are plenty of Americans who need the work. Sometimes the president is pretty smart...

Soooo, maybe hire an American? I don’t know, seems like a pretty good option. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Tell Sean Hannity so he can instruct Donald.

I challenge everyone in this thread to love your neighbor, regardless of who they vote for

Why, isn't there some dude with a really bad attitude or a meth problem available to run the chair lift?
