Historians believe the castle was ‘among the most important political and cultural centres in medieval England.

Archaeologists have discovered what’s left of one the most important strongholds in medieval England.

Archaeology lecturer Professor John Moreland said: ‘Sheffield is seen by most people as the Steel City, but what our research makes clear is that the city has a deep history that dates right back to the Middle Ages.

Archaeologists believe the castle was created alongside a planned town that still forms the core of Sheffield city centre. A plan drawn by William Fairbank in 1769 showing the inner courtyard and bowling green of Sheffield Castle Artefacts unearthed from the site, mainly from the surrounding moat, include a metal ear scoop, shoes, coins, cannonballs and knives.
