I’ve been waiting for something like this. A Brooklyn startup called Cinch Market is aggregating the inventory of local small businesses—from clothing boutiques to wine stores—so residents can shop several retailers at once and get a single, same-day delivery. The company’s clever tagline: “Shop Brooklyn Not Bezo$.”
At last! Like everyone who isn’t a complete psychopath, I try to shop local. But I don’t always have time for the 20-block trek to the nearest bookstore. Cinch Market, which I learned about from a flyer dropped on a stoop, aims to make it easy to support nearby merchants. “Every business in the community can integrate their inventory into the Brooklyn ‘Everything Store,’ ” says founder Maya Komerov, who launched the platform in June.
The site appeals to shoppers like Prospect Heights resident Lindsay Bressman, who worries about neighborhood businesses surviving the pandemic. While she shops Amazon.com almost every day, she tried Cinch recently to buy school and art supplies for her two kids. “I could see I was supporting four different local stores,” she says. “It felt like a friend running to the store to pick things up for me.
Alas, Cinch is not an “everything store” quite yet. Last week, I searched the site for the last 20 items I bought on Amazon. Cinch offered five of those items, including a bottle brush cleaner and a tobacco-scented candle. But I couldn’t find basics like printer paper and eyeliner. And to my total horror and dismay, it doesn’t yet carry books.
