Holidaymakers opting for a beachside getaway amid ongoing pandemic travel restrictions are expected in their droves along the NSW Central Coast, but one business owner says JobSeeker benefits have had an unexpected side-effect.

The New South Wales Central Coast is expected to boom this summer, with holidaymakers opting for a beachside getaway amid ongoing pandemic travel restrictions. But the future is not so bright for a well-established café in the coastal village of Avoca Beach, which has been forced to close due to staff shortages — a direct result, its owner says, of the Federal Government's JobSeeker and JobKeeper subsidies.

Paula Martin, director of the Central Coast NSW Business Chamber, said the closure was the first of its kind confirmed in the region, but that anecdotal evidence suggested it was not the only one."We are getting to the point in this crisis where business owners are telling me they are fatigued and they are exhausted."

With reductions in the coronavirus supplements due to kick-in late September, Paula Martin wants new government stimulus to target sectors that need it most, such as the hospitality, food and service industries."We are forecasting across the coast, we could be looking at up to 30 per cent of business closures," Ms Martin said.

Propaganda not journalism.

I read where someone applied to work there a couple months ago and they didn’t get a response from them.... hard to believe all these “no one will work for me” stories

If people simply can’t afford to work for you, time to look at your business model.

Jobseeker is well below the poverty line. If she's not paying her people enough to compete with that then she deserves to be shut down, because she's just exploiting vulnerable people. It would be nice to see a balanced story!

If people had been employed consistently for a year they would surely have to work their normal hours wouldn't they? Or is it only seasonal work

Ok 2 points. 1 people might be afraid to travel to a new town or area for work incase things go south and the government forces cafes to close up again and they have to stay without work and lower money with the jobkeeper/seeker. 2 what does her job add say?

Delete this...

I call bullshit on this one. Show us the job advertisements

Maybe she's a bad boss?

Missing a lot of detail ABC. What pay & conditions offered? Did you try and talk to one of the people who enquired about work then refused because of p&c? This industry is notorious for exploitation. Bad employers undercut those who pay well. More journalism needed.

jobkeeper not jobseeker. It is a shame journalists don’t know what they are talking about.

Oh Aunty! Please come back someday 😔

the dole is too attractive to do nothing $550/wk They dont even want to do fruit picking We have 1000s jobless migrants n hard to find labor They have been telling us we need migrants intake but it does nothing to fill the needs

Maybe you could... you know... offer higher pay to attract potential staff? And if you cannot do this maybe you should evaluate whether you should be going down the path of wanting to employ people?

Pay them

now I know why my tax money is wasted by fools..

Really? Her employees earning more than her? Highly doubtful as why would you have stayed in business for 6 years....Pay a decent wage and you will get employees. We the rats on the wheel are tired of the greed we are subjected to let alone they dare to whine!

marylouvince how much do you get paid for pushing out chamber of commerce PR and pretending it's journalism? more or less than Jobkeeper?

I'm not accusing her of anything, but it's a bit funny how these claims of people not wanting to work only ever seem to come from industries notorious for underpaying their staff...

I heard exactly the same complaints from 3 separate businesses in June on the NSW South Coast. A cafe, a restaurant and a van park couldn't compete with free government money for staying at home. It needs to be wound back or targetted better.

I call Bullshit

another winging boss blaming workers for not wanting to uproot their lives to come and work a casual hospo job for peanuts. how is this news?

*cough* market clearing rate of pay *cough*

We are in a free market economy and the market says supply and demand - you need to offer more money and keep doing it until you get the human resources you need.

They all joined antifa

Workers are so lazy but not too lazy to tell employers exactly how lazy they are. Sounds legit

Interested in knowing if anyone had their resume rejected by her or any other businesses that claims there are shortage of applicants.

This is a bit of a tired meme.
