Brisbane waste company Bio-Recycle is fined more than $300,000 for illegally dumping 274,000 tonnes of extra waste at its Ipswich landfill site without a permit for financial gain.

Waste company Bio-Recycle has been fined $300,000 after pleading guilty to two environmental breaches that saw the company accept 274,000 extra tonnes of waste over its allowed limit. The company was knocked back for an increased waste permit in 2018The Ipswich Magistrates Court heard the company operates a landfill site which takes building and demolition waste and disposes of it in old mining voids.

"The company has been previously fined for eight offences for wilfully contravening the condition of an environmental authority," Magistrate Shepherd said. Despite this, the court heard the waste company continued to illegally dump a surplus amount of waste at the site.

when will any politician realise WASTE = FUEL = EMPLOYMENT. Invest in the infrastructure to turn our waste from methane producing landfill to fuel. fuel landfill infrastructure

Cheapest contaminated fill dump I've seen is still in the realms of $150 a tonne. These guys are laughing

This is the environmental equivalent of rape laws that pardon the rapist if they marry their victim. It costs ~$80 a tonne to dump legally where I live not $1. Disgusting and the government should be seizing the profit as proceeds of crime.

The way the news items reads is they had $7.4 mio income for disposing of the said waste and paid $300k fine plus bits and pieces in “cost” for illegally disposing of it. That is a great deal I would say.

Not enough! The owners deserve prison time

The fine should 200 x what it would cost them to do things properly not 1 200th, this isn't a mistake it's a business model.

Bio-Recycle: let’s not recycle boys girls, let’s just dump a quarter million tonnes of waste in landfill instead !! How good is the recycling biz !!

Yeah, I’m sure that’ll hurt. They should lose the profits PLUS a financial penalty. This is dumbassery. What incentive do they have not to do it again? Oh yeah, NONE AT ALL.

Probably claiming job keeper payments to offset any fines

It’s a big game

Fined $1 per ton of dumped waste ? They'll be laughing all the way to the bank. In NSW, government tip charges are close to $200 per ton.

Mmmm that makes sense - icome generated from illegal dumping $7+million. Fine for illegal dumping $300k. Are you sure they won't do it again? Why would any competitor abide by dumping limits whe they are competing with this situation? IpswichCouncil LeeanneEnoch

With a fine of $1 per tonne, it is still cheaper for Bio-Recycle to illegally dump and run the gauntlet of getting caught than process the waste.

Other companies do it too and why not.....their carbon footprint and moral obligation looks good (until they are found out) and then the poxy inadequate fine is hardly a deterrent! As Consumers we spend time separating our waste when reality is it all gets dumped in landfill!

Do we need to riot at the bio recycle head office 🔥🔥🔥

It probably saved them a lot more than that.

Their name is a dead giveaway they didn't give a shit.

Let the blame on Trump begin! You know the democraps will find a way to blame him for this. Trump2020 TrumpNowMoreThanEver2020

Cheaper to get fined than to dispose of properly. It’s a no brainer why they do it

cheep tip fees

If they made $7.4m extra by their illegal manoeuvres then that should be the fine but the law said $2m max yet the troubled magistrate fined $300k yep theyre laughing all the way to the bank

Wow! Fined $1.09 per illegal tonne they dumped. That'll show 'em!

Just over $1 a ton fine hardly seems enough.
