"We appreciate that, we respect that and we agree with that. The one thing I keep trying to assure is on the front of everybody's mind is avoiding a border by accident." Mulvaney's intervention is significant as he is the first figure in the Trump administration to express concern over Johnson's plan to unilaterally determine elements of Northern Ireland's trade with Great Britain from next year.
However, Johnson's government is using legislation to give itself the power to decide unilaterally what checks on trade will take place. The UK governmentWashington has a strong interest in how Brexit will affect Northern Ireland. The US played a key role in brokering peace in the province.
